FAQS for Candidates

Q. Who can be an educator?
A. You need to be committed and passionate about providing quality care for children, over the age of 17 years and be able to show that you have provided care for children. You could be a mother, grandmother, older sibling or a qualified carer.

Q. How much will I get paid to be a babysitter, nanny or Homebased Educator?
A. Babysitting rates across New Zealand are $15 per hour (paid to you direct from the family). Nanny rates start from the minimum wage of $14.75 per hour and can go up to $30 per hour - role and region dependant (you are an employee). Homebased educators (contrctors) charge $4 - $8 per hour per child. You determine your rate. 

Q. Can I choose just to be a nanny or educator, I don’t really want to be a babysitter
A. Yes, however we strongly suggest you register on our website and then you will receive all job postings. You never know when a babysitting role may allow you to earn extra income or could be in the same street as you. If you don’t want the role - you don’t need to do anything. However from time to time posted jobs may work around your current commitments. 

Q. How long will it take before I can start being put forward to jobs?
A. One we complete all you paperwork and your police check is back and ‘clear’. Police checks can take several weeks to process. This is dependent on the backlog at the Police Vetting Service. 

Q. Can I register in more than one area?
A. No – once you register in a specific area, you will receive notifications of nanny jobs/babysitting bookings in that area. If you move towns, you can edit your contact details and change over to another area and receive notifications. 

Q. What do I do after I accept a babysitting booking?
A. After accepting a babysitting booking online, we require you to contact the client within 24 hours to introduce yourself to them directly. If a client wants to meet with you beforehand, depending on how far in advance a booking is placed, this is possible. If you do meet, for security reasons, please ensure you arrange to meet in a public place. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable when you arrive at a babysitting booking have our number on hand. In circumstance you feel in danger for any reason, leave the site and call 111. 

Q.What is the minimum age for a babysitter or a nanny?
A. 17 years of age. Some families will request sitters or nannies that are older due to them feeling they may have had more experience.

Q. What sort of details do I need to put in my profile page wording?
A. Your profile will be sent to the parents once you have accepted the babysitting job. This is just to let the parent know a little bit about yourself, please make sure this is user friendly, talks about your experience with children. For your own security, please do not put any personal information such as mobile phone number or email address. Remember your reader… what will make that family think “Fabulous! She sounds perfect!”

Q. Am I able to charge a higher hourly rate?
A. Not for babysitting bookings, the rates on the website pricing page are the rates you are to be paid and under no circumstances are you to ask for more money. The nanny rates are negotiable between you and the family.

Q. Will I have financial support for travel with a babysitting or nanny role?
A. If you are required to use your own personal car during your babysitting placement, then you can charge a fuel cost. Any money offered for travel to and from the job would be listed in the job placement ad.

Q. How do I get paid when I complete a babysitting role?
A. Payment is made to you in cash at the end of the evening/day - in some cases the client may be invoiced for the full amount and we pay you. This may happen if it is a hotel booking. If this is the case you will be informed.

Q. What should I do if a family asks if I am available to babysit for them again?
A. Under no circumstances are you to accept private bookings – if a client requests you again, that is not a problem. Inform the client to email through to the regional office and request you - we can assign the booking directly to you. If you have been contacted by a client to babysit again, please also contact your regional office to inform them as well. If we find that you have been taking private bookings with clients, we will suspend your account with RMB and you will no longer be part of our group. We have strict processes in place for your safety.

Q. How do I apply for a nanny job?
A. Please follow instructions on the nanny job page. Click apply, this will open your email account up, if you use Hotmail or Yahoo, you will need to manually email along with the correct JOBID number, ensuring you have the correct office email. Attach your CV each time you apply for a nanny job, make sure your CV does not have any personal contact information (take out mobile and home phone numbers, street number, date/month of your birth date). This is for security reasons – as we forward your CV on to clients.

Q. Who pays for my tax when I am a nanny?
A. RMB does not employ you – your families will employ you directly and are responsible for all your tax obligations, ACC and KiwiSaver obligations.
